Hubs V Switches

broadcast signal to all nodes connected - HUB
makes point to point connections - SWITCH
cuts down on network traffic improving performance - SWITCH
bandwidth is divided amongst all nodes - HUB
each node can achieve the full bandwidth available on the network - SWITCH
automatic shut down capability to block connection to any stations with problems - HUB

McAlpNetwork has 100 Mbps transmission speed Max. It has 5 workstations connected via a HUB

1) What transmission speed is available to each workstation - 20 Mbps

2) Replaced by a Switch, The HUB is launched - What transmission rate would be available now? - 100 Mbps the maximum is available to each node

3) Whats the difference between the way a hub and router send data around a network? - finds the best/fastest/quickest/most efficient route to send data, HUB amplifies the signal and broadcasts it to all nodes

4)Why do Routers need processing capability? - to process choose and calculate the path

5) Why are NIC's needed? - Network Interface Card - so we can connected, hardware and software required to allow communication between two networks, changing data so it can be understood etc ...
