Wide Area Network
4. What is the difference between a WAN and a LAN?
WAN - over a large geographical area (e.g. city) LAN - smaller area (house or school, office)
5. Name two transmission media which could be used with a LAN network?
wifi and bluetooth (wireless) Optical Fibre and Copper Wire
6. Name two transmission media which could be used with a WAN network?
Satellite and Optical Fibre, Microwave
7. Name two advantages of using LAN networks
Data Sharing/Resource Sharing, Peripheral Sharing, Email Service
8. What is the name of the small circuit board that all computers are required to be fitted with in order to access a network?
NIC - network Interface Card
9. What is a Client Server network?
where multiple clients take resources from several servers (web, file, printer)

10. Describe three advantages of using Client Server Networks
increased security (must log onto network, levels of access) flexible access (use any machine on the network) sharing peripherals, everything saved locally
work group usage (many authors on the same document)
11. Describe two disadvantages of using Client Server Networks
if the server is down you can't access the resources on it
expensive to buy printer etc servers
